Oil Coolers

How do Oil Coolers Work?

Oil coolers allow an engine's cooling system to remove excess heat from the oil. In most cases, engine oil is fed to the oil cooler from an adapter that is located between the engine block and the oil filter. As the oil flows through the cooler, the heat is removed from the oil via fan. The excess heat is then released into the air, and the cooled oil is fed back into the engine. Standard vehicles, such as sedans and SUVs, generally do not have a need for oil coolers, as their radiators provide adequate cooling for their oil. Typically, oil coolers are installed on specialized vehicles such as racing cars, tow trucks, and semis.
